Use Textiles to Decorate a Home

First, find some cloth or textiles that speak to you. Look for unique hand painted fabrics or silks, antique doilies or vintage velvet scarves. No matter what style you like, do a treasure hunt in your own closet to get started. Once you have found some desired textile, look at the size and shape of it to determine how and where you can utilize it to decorate your home. For example, frame fabric from Eastern Indian saris. This perfectly square fabric, with its hand painted fabric and beading lent itself perfectly for a square picture frame. Simply purchase a standard sized frame and center the fabric in the middle.

If your textile is small and round, like antique doilies might be, simply sandwich it between two pieces of round glass for a special table top (like the plain wooden occasional tables they sell at any superstore). Take a vintage scarf, either square or rectangle-shaped and drape it over a coordinating curtain rod for an easy window treatment. Use a beaded fringe scarf to dress up a small window and add a little something extra to the room. You can find special scarf holder brackets at your design or home improvement store. Experiment with the arrangement over the rod to get the best look for the length of material you have.

If you have a number of coordinating textiles, like multiple scarves or embroidered hankies, consider doing a little sewing to make a beautiful and unique banner to hang on the wall. Six average hankies or three rectangular scarves make terrific wall hangings that will warm up your space in a jiffy.
