General Overview
A schoolbus driver is a professional driver who is responsible for transporting school-age children. The person who is hired for this job must have an extremely clean driving record with no accidents and no serious traffic tickets for violations such as speeding, running red lights or driving while under the influence of any controlled substance. School bus drivers must be highly reliable and responsible people who take their jobs very seriously.
Typical Workday
A school bus driver spends a typical workday transporting children to and from school. He begins the work day around 6:00 a.m., and drives to various bus stops, picking up children from near their homes. He has a very specific route and time schedule that he must adhere to. The bus driver must make sure that the children arrive at school before the start of the first class. During the school day, the bus driver spends much of his time taking some of the children and their teachers to field trip destinations that may be several hours away. At the end of the school day, the bus driver safely transports all the students back to their homes.
Qualifications
In order to become a school bus driver, a person must have a clean driving record before even being considered for the job. Prior experience driving large vehicles such as buses and trucks is helpful, but usually not required. He must be ready to demonstrate his driving skills in a school bus driving test before being hired.
