An info publishing business can be successful with a lot of hard work and proper business planning. Businesses open every day, but unfortunately, businesses also fail every day. Most businesses fail because the owners were not properly prepared to start a business. Follow these tips to learn how to increase your chances at starting a successful info publishing business. Create a business plan. A business plan can help you set business goals and determine funds, equipment and supply needs (see Resources below).
Get a DBA (doing business as), also called a fictitious business name filing. If you plan to do business under any name other than your own, a DBA is necessary. You need a DBA to open a bank account and cash checks under the business name. A DBA can be obtained at your local court house. Get a business license. Most cities require businesses to have a business license. Go to your local city hall building to get a business license. Rent an office or set up an office in your home.
Buy all equipment and supplies needed to start your info publishing business. A computer, printer and an Internet connection are essential. If you are planning on making print books, either purchase a printing press or arrange for a printing company to print your books. A small manually operated printing press that produces professional-quality books can be purchased for as little as $1,000. The manual printing presses are slow and therefore are only a viable option for producing a small quantity of books (see Resources below). Create a Web presence. Have a Web page designer design a website and arrange for Web hosting for your business. If you plan to sell on the Web, have the Web page designer create a shopping cart on the website. If you plan on selling print books in stores, purchase an ISBN number for each title that you intend to sell. An ISBN is a bar code that details information about the book. An ISBN number can be purchased at ISBN.org (see Resources below).
Place your info products up for sale. You can sell print and ebooks on your website, or through stores like Amazon. Go to Amazon.com to find out how to sell your books on their website (see Resources below). Decide if you want to sell works created by other writers. You will need to create a contract for both you, the publisher, and the writer to sign. The contact should state who has rights to the book and delineate financial considerations.
Advertise. This is perhaps the most important step in running your business. No one will know about your info publishing business if they don't hear about it. Advertise on the Web through your website. Advertise in classified ads. Print business card and give them to companies to help them remember your info publishing business. Advertise by contacting online companies and traditional stores and offering to sell your product in their stores or on their website.
