Job Description of a Hotel Manager

While there are no special qualifications required to obtain a position as a hotel manager, many do posses a degree in hospitality services or business administrations . This is because much of the work of a hotel manager has to do with the organization and planning of hotel services, from maintaining financial records to promoting the place. In smaller hotels, hotel managers may also be in charge of managing the budget and achieving particular profit goals. When it comes to licenses and safety or health code regulations, it is usually up to the hotel manager to ensure that things are up to date.

Function
Hotel managers are also in charge of personnel. While large hotels may have a human resources department or another person in charge of workers, the hotel manager is still the person who recruits and approves new staff, as well as monitoring training and planning work schedules.

Considerations
While hotel managers rarely work directly with the public, they do address customer complaints if these cannot be handled properly by employees. In some cases, they also handle customer greeting, especially in the case of important figures. If there are special events, conferences or business meetings being held at the hotel, it's usually the work of the manager to ensure that things run smoothly and that supplies and security are in place.

Potential
If there is work being done at the hotel, such as maintenance or renovations, these orders usually have to be approved by the hotel manager, who then supervises the work. She ensures that both the services and the property are not damaged in the process. The same is true of addressing technical problems, both related to computers or to inner workings of the hotel.

Types
Hotel managers may have other obligations depending on the type of hotel. Those who work at resort hotels will have to supervise the proper functioning of golf courses, spas and swimming pools. Those who are employed at an extended-stay hotel have to make sure the fully equipped kitchens contained within the apartments work properly and the equipment in the fitness center is up-to-date and in optimal condition.
