Initially, do not expect cats to get along in the same areas. Briefly introduce them to each other on opposite sides of a room. Speak softly and whisper soothing words. Then, relegate each cat to their own space--preferably separate rooms with doors that can be closed.
Give each cat their own food and water dish in their separate areas. If they must share a litter box, place the box in a neutral area. Take a blanket or towel each cat enjoys sleeping on or playing with, and place the item in the other cat's living space. This will begin to familiarize each cat to the other's smell.
Gradually allow the cats to share space. Leave the doors open between rooms. Place food dishes in neutral areas. Encourage the cats with soothing words to associate with each other. While some cats never become social, most cats will eventually learn to co-exist.
