Magnetic signs are a great way to advertise your business. From contractors to AVON reps, the signs draw attention and may even get you business while sitting in rush hour traffic! Designing them doesn't have to be hard. As long as you have the right tools and an understanding of how to design for this medium, you will be fine.
Choose a vendor and talk to them about what they require. Signs usually have different requirements than business cards and cannot have real complicated graphics. If possible, ask them for a template file you can use to avoid any surprises. Sketch out a design for your sign. Most people start with their business card. Remember that you do not want to put too much information on the sign as it will be read from a distance. Anything you do needs to be large enough to be read from far away.
Make sure you have the right tools and know how to use them. Adobe Illustrator is an industry standard. If you don't have a copy and can't afford to buy it, you can always go to Kinko's and use their computers. Check out some books from the library so you can learn how it works. Create a new file in Illustrator. Make sure that your colors are set up for CMYK or PANTONE. Your printer will let you know what you need to do. Save your file in eps format, making sure all text has been converted to outlines. Give it to your printer and make sure you get a proof for your sign.
