Choose the cleaner appropriate for your hardware. Your local grocery or discount store will offer several pastes or liquid cleaners suitable for your specific hardware. Note that certain older hardware may be tarnished, so you will need a cleaner with a tarnish remover.
Remove the metal hardware from the cabinets using your screwdriver. Keep the screws together since they are easily lost. Clean any screws that are visible before you reattach the hardware.
Mix equal parts of warm water and vinegar to soak both the hardware and the screws. This will help loosen any hard dirt and grease that may have accumulated. There is no need to soak for very long; 10 minutes or so is sufficient.
Remove each piece of hardware one at a time for detailed cleaning. Use your soft brush to remove any remaining grease or dirt. Depending upon the type of metal finish, you will be using a liquid or a paste to clean the hardware. Follow the directions on the containers and either coat or soak your hardware.
Rinse the liquid-soaked hardware with warm water or wipe the paste-coated hardware with a soft cloth to remove all cleaner residue. Polish your metal hardware with a soft, dry cloth until completely dry. Clean the face of your cabinets while the hardware is removed. Use an appropriate wood cleaner for this task. Reattach the clean metal hardware to your cabinets.
