Clean Dust From Art Textiles

Plug in your vacuum cleaner and affix the wand attachment to the vacuum hose. Put a piece of nylon stocking over the end of the wand. You can use brand new or used nylons for this, as long as they're clean. Secure the stocking around the end of the wand with a rubber band. Turn on the vacuum cleaner. Hold the nylon-covered end of the wand about six inches from the textile's surface and slowly move the wand closer as you watch closely. When you can actually see dust particles lifting off of the textile and onto the nylons, you'll know that you don't need to move the wand any closer.

Continue moving the wand over the entire surface of the textile, being very careful not to actually touch the nylons to the textile's surface. Turn off the vacuum cleaner when all of the dust has been sucked off of the textile. Be sure to pull the wand far away from the artwork before doing so, however, because most of the dust will likely be trapped on the outside of the nylon. When the suction is turned off, the dust may fall off. Wrap the dust up inside the nylons and wash them by hand.
